DESCRIPTION:
Bel Ami is one of the Strenna editions that Olivetti began producing in 1972 as Christmas gifts: a series of celebrated literary masterpieces, illustrated using specially commissioned drawings by contemporary artists.
Bel Ami, Guy de Maupassant’s second realist novel, published in 1885, tells of the social rise of Georges Duroy, an ambitious and seductive man, who goes from being a poor soldier on leave and a modest employee of the Northern Railways to becoming one of the most successful men in Parisian society, thanks to journalism and his ability to manipulate powerful women.
Against the backdrop of the protagonist’s social ascent, Maupassant describes French society in the last decades of the 19th century and the interdependent relationships between the press, politics and business.
The events also concern the influence of women, excluded from political life but operating in the shadows as advisors and mentors of powerful men.
The illustrations are by Carlo Cattaneo, one of the most famous Ligurian painters and engravers of the twentieth century.
