DESCRIPTION:
Notre-Dame de Paris is one of the Strenna editions that Olivetti began producing in 1972 as Christmas gifts: a series of celebrated literary masterpieces, illustrated using specially commissioned drawings by contemporary artists.
Notre-Dame de Paris translates as “Our Lady of Paris” and is a historical novel by Victor Hugo, published in 1831, when the author was 29 years old. It was the French writer’s first great success: it was immediately well received, overcoming the censorship of the time. The title refers to the famous cathedral in Paris, one of the main locations in which the plot is set. The illustrations that accompany the text reproduce engravings by Charles Meryon, the French artist, painter, engraver and poet.
